Sequencing your move
Most Florida moves go wrong in the ordering, not the effort. Residency comes first, because it changes your tax position from the day it is real and almost everything downstream asks for a Florida address.
Schools come next, because admissions calendars are fixed months ahead and will not bend to a closing date. Then choose the area, then the home inside it.
Tax and residency
Florida has no state income tax. Establishing domicile is a set of concrete acts: a lease or deed, a Florida driver's licence, voter registration, and a declaration of domicile filed with the county.
The state you leave will look for the mirror image. High-tax states such as New York and California audit departures, so a clean break, a day count and a paper trail matter more than the paperwork in Florida itself.
Visas and immigration
US citizens and green card holders move freely. International movers usually arrive on an E-2 treaty investor, L-1 intra-company, O-1 or EB-5 route, and the visa timeline sets the outer bound of the whole move.
Plan everything else backwards from the visa date. It is rarely the step you can compress.
Buying or renting
There are no restrictions on foreign ownership. The costs that surprise buyers are insurance, which varies sharply by flood zone and building age, and condominium rules tightened after the Surfside collapse, which now require structural reserves.
Homestead exemption caps annual assessment increases on a primary residence, so file for it in your first year.
Schools
Strong public districts sit in Coral Gables, Boca Raton, Naples and parts of Palm Beach, alongside a deep independent school market in Miami and Palm Beach. Most private schools admit in January and February for an August start.
Florida grades every public school each year, and relo's schools directory ranks them by that grade.
Healthcare
Care is private and insurance-led. Miami and Tampa have major academic medical centres, and concierge practices are common in Palm Beach and Naples.
Arrange coverage before the move date, because a gap between plans is the most common and most avoidable problem.
Banking and money
Opening a US account is straightforward with a Florida address and identification. International movers should open one before arriving if their bank has a US arm.
Moving assets across a state line changes nothing federally, but update addresses everywhere at once, because a lingering out-of-state address undermines a domicile claim.
