Sequencing your move
Choose the canton first, because it sets your tax. Then secure the residence permit, then rent, and buy only once resident.
Tax and residency
Income and wealth tax are set largely by canton and municipality. Zug and Schwyz carry some of the lowest rates in Switzerland, while Zurich canton is notably higher.
Lump-sum taxation, based on living expenses rather than income, is available to non-working foreign residents in Zug and Schwyz but was abolished in Zurich canton in 2009.
Visas and immigration
EU and EFTA citizens move under freedom of movement. Other nationals need a work permit sponsored by an employer, subject to quotas, or a lump-sum taxation arrangement agreed with the canton.
Buying or renting
Lex Koller largely bars non-residents from buying homes. Once resident, a buyer can generally buy the home they live in.
Vacancy rates are very low, so expect competition for rentals and come prepared with a full application file.
Schools
The International School of Zug and Luzern, Zurich International School and the Inter-Community School Zurich serve international families. Swiss public schools are excellent and teach in German.
Healthcare
Basic health insurance is compulsory for every resident within three months of arrival. Supplementary cover buys private rooms and choice of doctor.
Banking and money
Swiss banks open accounts readily for residents. US persons face extra paperwork because of FATCA, and some banks decline them, so check before you choose.
